Exploring History at Mount Holly

Some of the most notable citizens of Arkansas lie in repose behind our native stone walls and wrought-iron gates. Mount Holly Cemetery’s four square blocks contain more history than just about any other spot in the state. The cemetery has been called the Westminster Abbey of Arkansas due to the number of notable Arkansans laid to rest here: 11 state governors, 14 state supreme court justices, 4 Confederate generals, 22 Little Rock mayors, two Pulitzer prize winners, and numerous military heroes, prominent physicians, church leaders, and attorneys.

Prominent Arkansans from the territorial years through the present are buried here, some in the same lots as free black people. Suffragettes lie next to politicians. Wealthy businessmen and founders of important Arkansas institutions are neighbors with relatively unknown farmers and laborers. Socialites lie next to slaves.
